Bolthouse Farms Perfectly Protein Mocha Cappuccino

Complete Score: 34.5 / 42 = 82.1%

A few months ago John introduced me to what he described as "the best protein shake I've ever had". Indeed, after he poured me a glass of Bolthouse Farms Perfectly Protein Mocha Cappuccino I agreed with him completely, that drink was delicious!

Value

At Stop & Shop a one liter bottle is $4.29, and at Shaw's and Whole Foods it's $3.99. In either case, it's not cheap. Still, considering there are four servings in one bottle and the amount of nutrients per serving it's an OK deal. For one serving, you get 150% of your Vitamin B6, B12 and C needs, plus 19% of your potassium, 10 grams of protein, 45% of your calcium, 20% of your magnesium, zinc, and vitamin D and 10% of your daily iron need. Note this nutritional information is directly from the official Bolthouse Farms page for the Mocha Cappuccino Protein drink.

Plus it's got a little bit of caffeine, no artificial sugars and tastes great. All in all you could make your own protein shake for considerably cheaper but if you must get a pre-made drink, this one is packed with the good stuff for a semi-reasonable price.

Score: 4 / 5

Quality

Simply put, this drink is delicious.

As I've mentioned above, one serving costs $1 but also comes jam packed with enough nutrients for a day. Still, I often find it tough to resist a second glass of this stuff, it's just that good. If you like mocha cappuccinos, you must give this drink a try.

Innovation

Well, as I said in the intro, the Perfectly Protein Mocha Cappuccino drink is one of the best protein drinks I've ever tasted, which is saying something because usually protein shakes are not the tastiest of drinks. Normally I wouldn't award too many innovation points to a drink like this one, but Bolthouse Farms nailed the taste of this drink so well that they've earned it.

Score: 4 / 5

Social Benefit

Well, all of the Bolthouse Farms drinks come in plastic bottles. They are recyclable but plastic is notorious for being more difficult (e.g. resource intensive) to recycle than aluminum or glass. On the plus side, these drinks have all natural ingredients and the bottle is a hefty 1 liter, so at least they jam a big amount of goodness into that plastic bottle. Also Bolthouse Farms is family owned and produces a lot of organic carrots and other produce. They're located in California, which is much closer and thus requires less energy to get to me than the Australian blood oranges I reviewed earlier this week. Overall, they could do better but so can nearly every company and consumer on the planet.

Score: 3.75 / 5

Freestyle!

Warning: the Bolthouse Farms Perfectly Protein Mocha Cappuccino drink is borderline addictive! At least it's a relatively health addiction, though everything should be consumed in moderation!

This stuff is really, really tasty. I just wish it wasn't so fracking expensive.

Score: 18 / 22

Bolthouse Farms Perfectly Protein Mocha Cappuccino is available at Stop & Shop, Shaw's, Whole Foods and most other supermarkets.

  1. I agree, this stuff is delicious! But, borderline addictive??? No, it’s 1000000% addictive!! I hate to admit that I drink a whole liter bottle at a sitting! Just can’t stop drinking it. I’m gonna have to kick, though, I’m gaining pounds!

  2. True Honi, very true! I was merely trying to fool myself into thinking the addiction can be broken!

Kidding of course but this stuff is a little too delicious for our own good…hey we could always be addicted to much, much worse things so I’m OK with it.

    ;)

  4. I’ve been drinking this stuff for almost 2 years and I LOVE it! I used to get it at Sam’s Club at 2 bottles for $5, but last month they stopped carrying it. :-( Has anyone checked Wal-Mart? I hate to go there, but if I can get it for less than $4/bottle, I will. I paid $3.99 at Giant for a long time, but now it’s $4.19. I have 8 oz every morning as my breakfast.

  5. Do you have a Whole Foods near you Ellin? They stock it and for cheaper than at Giant/Stop&Shop ($3.99).

You might want to try to send an e-mail to the good people behind the drink, they’ve been known to give out a couple coupons now and then.

Stuff is expensive though to have as breakfast every morning!

  6. I’ve been a convert to this drink for about a year but the price has increased from roughly 4.75 to 5.75 cad.I usually order a case(6) or two from a local farm market when they get their orders and save about 20%. Unfortunately I may have to find another alternative if the price keeps going up. That said, I usually make the bottle last a whole week by taking sips, that’s the key. Allow the flavour to coat your taste buds, don’t gulp it.

  7. Good tip Ken. I’ll have to see if there’s a farm or small market around here that might be allow me to order through them, $4+ is just too much for this addictive concoction!

  8. The Cappuccino Protein drink is fabulous. However, I’m too tempted to drink the “whole” bottle. You all should make some 8 oz. bottles as well.
    Thanks!

  9. Hehe. They are quite addictive, eh Starr?

My suggestions is to drink it slowly and really savor the flavor. Also, when the bottle is running low I like to mix it with some 2% milk to extend the tastiness a little bit longer.

  10. Oh, this stuff is wonderful! Occasionally Save-On Foods has it for less than $4, so I pick up a bottle and only take sips directly from the bottle to make it last as many days as I can. It smells a bit odd, like beans (I guess from the soy) but the taste is amazing. Not too sweet, no weird aftertaste. I’m tempted to try another flavour like the Vanilla Chai, but I can’t resist getting this one!

  11. Discovered the Mocha drink last months and LOVE IT! I used to drink the LA Jet Start iced coffee drinks, but switched to this one. It’s much less expensive than a Starbucks everyday and the flavor is wonderful. It’s only $3.99 at my local store. I’ve dropped my Starbucks habit and feel it’s a much healthier drink.

  12. Hey,

Does anyone know where to buy the Mocha Cappuchino in the South Lake Tahoe, CA or Carson City, NV or Reno, NV area? Whole Foods in Reno doesn’t carry it anymore. Used to be able to buy it at Walmart in Carson City, but they aren’t carrying it either .. . .any thoughts?

    Thanks!!!

  13. I love Mocha Cappuchino and all the other flavors, I have my 4 children 10-19 addicted to it. It can get very expensive when you have to buy 5 bottles every couple of days so there is enough to go around. I am wondering if there is a web site or any publications that offer coupons for these Bolthouse products.

  14. I am a major cappuccino and coffee drinker and have had most brands and this is the best. I was just introduced to it by a friend of mine and I am hooked. I am a nurse who works nightshift in a ICU and have turned my coworkers on as well. When I do find it in stores, I usually buy all that they have because alot of places don’t have it or are out of it frequently. Great Product!!!!!!!

  15. I was pleasantly surprised to find BoltHouse Mocha Cappuchino at Walmart for $3.19 a bottle compared to regular grocery store price of $3.99. I do not normally shop at Walmart but I will make the trip for a Bolthouse product.

  17. Yes i do agree it does taste really good and the amount of protein and other stuff is amazing. But does it come from meat? milk is ok with me but i drink it because i am vegetarian and need a good source of protein. NO LIES!!!

  18. Does the protein come from meat?

  19. pllleeeeeeeaaaaasssssseeeee respond. Thanks = )

  20. Don’t know Antoinette. You should contact Bolthouse Farms to get a sure answer, but, I don’t see why they’d extract protein from meat when they could so so from soy. Soy protein should be much cheaper than meat protein…
